Press Release - The Lakeland Derby PRESS CONFERENCE: When: EVENT INFO: When: Lakeland Volunteers in Medicine is proud to present LVIM’s premier community event, The Lakeland Derby. In the spirit of the Kentucky Derby, The Lakeland Derby will be a race complete with jockeys wearing vibrant colored silks and spectators donning fancy hats. In honor of the city’s symbol, the main event will feature ten impressive fiberglass swans racing on Lake Mirror. A Parade to the Post at 6:00PM will signal the beginning of the swan derby. Derby gates open at 6:30PM. The beautiful hand-crafted swans, each with their own company sponsored jockey, will race to the finish line as spectators enjoy the first annual picturesque Lakeland Derby. The event will begin with “The Running of the Ducks”. Over 1,000 yellow “duckies” will be adopted by classrooms, families and companies. The community will experience the thrill of attending the Derby and watching their “duck” race on Lake Mirror. A post race V.I.P. dinner will recognize Physicians who have contributed their time and expertise to LVIM’s mission. Fireworks will cap off the memorable inaugural event.
