Three year old swan Sindy, owned and trained by Rooms To Go savored its third straight victory in the 2010 Lakeland Derby on what is now considered the wettest track on record. Despite the fierce competition, an aging swan, and headwinds, veteran jockeys Justin Miller and Joseph Herring pulled off a stunning three peat in front of record crowds. Strawberry Special of Wish Farms owned/trained by Lester Wishnatzki and ridden by Julie Adams and Amy Jackson were the nearest challengers. These two young riders managed to draw every ounce of swan power, but second place was a good finish for these first-time racers. Whirlaway gave owner Burnetti Children’s Foundation its second consecutive 3rd place finish. A strong showing for rookie jockeys John Berke and Tom Day positioned them solidly as one of the favorites for next year’s running of the swans.
In conclusion, the annual Lakeland Derby proved yet again to be as entertaining as it is unique. The races allow for great individual and team performances, much like the hard working volunteers at Lakeland Volunteers in Medicine. This new legacy that is forever known as The Lakeland Derby has captured the community at large and marked its place to continue the tradition for years to come.
As a note, all swans were in good order at the end of the race and no animals were harmed during the entire production of the 2010 Lakeland Derby.
